CIRIN
recently joined hands with Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL)
to bring a range of much needed vaccines to Pakistan. The
first vaccine “Abhayrab®” from an impressive list was made
available for sale in August 2007.
Abhayrab® is a
product of Human Biological Institute (HBI). Indian
Immunologicals Limited (IIL) is parent organization of HBI –
and in turn is a wholly owned subsidiary of The National
Dairy Development Board (NDDB). This public sector
organization is running multiple production facilities in
Hyderabad and Ooty (India) – for both animal and human
vaccines.
Established in
1982 by NDDB, Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) initially
got technology for FMD vaccine manufacturing from Wellcome
Foundation Limited, United Kingdom. This organization has
since come a long way in R&D and indigenous production of
vaccines.
With a capacity
to produce 80 million trivalent doses of FMD vaccine at its
Hyderabad plant, IIL is the world’s largest producer of FMD
vaccine.
The HBI-managed-facility
in Ooty is used to manufacture the Vero cell culture rabies
vaccine for humans. The plant was set up in 1998 at the
request of Government of India to phase out use of older and
unsafe sheep brain vaccine with the modern Tissue Culture
Vaccine. IIL is the second company in the world to launch
the purified Vero cell rabies vaccine (PVRV).
Today, the
organization is manufacturing single and combination
vaccines like Hepatitis B, DPT+Hepatitis B, and MMR. These
manufacturing facilities are designed to match USFDA and WHO
standards. |
