Birth of an Idea:
is not just another business proposition for a group of investors. It is intended to be more than a mere profit-making-project. It represents an idea – a vision – of ambitious entrepreneurs, combining their intellect, financial resources, and efforts to form a “national” pharmaceutical manufacturer par excellence; an establishment capable to meet healthcare needs of common Pakistanis and that too with quality matching with products available in developed world. Since its inception in 1991, the company has covered a lot of distance, towards its mission and it is still going on – perhaps with more vigor today than before. Following is the list of, not all, but only a few of milestones achieved over the past fifteen years. This is intended to remind us what we were, what we have achieved, and where we want to be…………. 1991, December: CIRIN is incorporated as a limited liability company under Companies Ordinance 1984 with Corporate Law Authority (now Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan) Peshawar Chapter. 1993, January: Ground-breaking ceremony is held at plant’s site in Hattar Industrial Estate. Mr. Muhammad Yousaf, Mr. Khwaja Abdul Basir, and Mr. Munim Sultan (founder members) of the company were present on the occasion. This simple ceremony is followed by prayers and lunch for the guests. Mr. Munim hoped that the civil works and building of plant would be completed in two years time and the company would start production in early 1995. 1994, September: After thorough inspection of the production facilities of the company, Ministry of Health, awards License to Manufacture Drugs to CIRIN Pharmaceuticals. 1995, January: First batch of marketing executives and medical representatives is inducted. Management takes initiative by assembling an ambitious, reputable, and energetic team of marketing executives, who are known for their accomplishments. Strong team at the center, in turn, has attracted top performers to join the field force. Everybody is upbeat and shares the same mission – i.e. to make “CIRIN” a success story. 1995, February: CIRIN starts regular production of tablets, capsules, dry syrups, and drops. Zeemox® is the flagship product for the company. Regular sale is started and company manages to sell all of its production on immediate basis. Repeat orders and healthy feedback from market shows tremendous potential for the company in coming months. 1996, June: CIRIN starts filling Injections (powder). Zeemox® is now available in total eight presentations after launching of Injections in three new presentations i.e 250mg, 500mg, and 1gm. CIRIN becomes first company in the entire region to have such state-of-art injection filling facilities. 1996, October: Sachet filling facility starts operations. VITACAL® range is launched. This adds depth in company’s already impressive product range. 1999, July: To cater for fast growing product range of the company and expanding market, management decides to launch a second strategic business unit - SBU II. Existing products are now divided amongst these two groups enabling medical representatives to focus better on their own respective basket of products. 2000, January: CIRIN is now rated amongst Top100 pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan. The company is moving steadily towards realization of the “vision” of its founders. Sales Director sees CIRIN amongst Top50 companies in another six-to-seven years time. 2001, December: CIRIN sales cross Rs. 100 million mark for the first time in calendar year 2001. Not exactly what the company has been aiming for but considering cut-throat competition in a highly saturated market, this can be rated as an achievement for a five year old national company. These are the times when most of CIRIN’s siblings are facing financial crisis and struggling to avoid complete shutdown. CIRIN on the other hand is consistently posting profit and maintaining a healthy growth rate. 2004, December: CIRIN gets ISO9001 certification. It was in the very initial stages of production that CIRIN designed and implemented an efficient and robust Quality Management System. Presence of a matured and time-tested system was evident in the adequacy and certification audits conducted by world-renowned SGS. This fact was duly acknowledged by the auditors who very visibly impressed by equal commitment of management and employees at different levels of the organization. 2005, July: CIRIN's new sterile area starts production. CIRIN now has two independent injection filling facilities – one dedicated for penicillin-group and the second one for cephalosporin-group. 2006, September: Quite a few products of CIRIN are sold in powder injection form e.g. Zeemox®, Ceptin®, Cefcin®, Fotax®, and Hy-Cortisone®. Water for Injection is provided with the packing as a diluent. Up until now WFI was coming from an (approved) external source. To sustain growing sales of listed products, management decided to have an in-house production facility for WFI. In line with this policy, Liquid injection filling facilities have been established with capacity to fill 1ml, 2ml, 5ml, and 10ml ampoules. 2006, October: CIRIN now has as many as fifty presentations of different products – and still more products in the offing. This warrants for expansion in field force and thus SBU III has been launched. The third group will initially handle Pirosil® and Qalergen®, with host of new products on card. 2007, August: CIRIN enters into biotech arena by launching its first rabies vaccine Abhayrab® in Pakistan. Marketing of this imported product marks CIRIN’s first step towards installing a vaccine filling facility and ultimately to have vaccines’ basic manufacturing locally in Pakistan. This may very well prove to be the turning point in history of the company. 2007, September: With the launch of Cataplas® and Fermax®, CIRIN’s adds liquid injection based products in its offering. The company is now boasting a wide range of products in tablets, capsules, drops, syrups, injections, and sachet. There are very few pharmaceutical manufacturers in Pakistan with matching variety in their products. 2007, October: CIRIN takes another leap towards its ultimate objective when its sales soared past Rs. 200M mark in only 10th month of the year. The company is now ranked at number66 in pharmaceutical companies of Pakistan with expected improvement of three more places by year-end. |
